From https://www.nbcdfw.com/news/local/veteran-reunites-college-sweetheart-50-years-apart/3887272/ At 71 years old, Richard Smith of Arlington has racked up more achievements than most. The Ranger and Green Beret spent 20 years in the Army, plus another 23 years after that in the Civil Air Patrol. The veteran-turned-pilot can now add another name to his long list of titles: Prince Charming. “I lost her one time. I ain’t going to lose her again,” said Smith. Smith's love story with Jan Branton began at Meridian Junior College in 1972, in their home state of Mississippi. “He stopped by and said, ‘Well, hi, when are you and I going on a date together?’ and that was the beginning of a love affair,” recalled Branton. They dated for four years during their time at Mississippi State. Then Smith joined the military. Headed for a life of active duty, Smith said he loved Branton enough to let her go. “I was afraid it'd be too much for her, too dangerous, and she'd worry about me. That's why I let her go. I didn't want to,” said Smith. Both were married, never had children, and decades later, never forgot. “I said a prayer, I said, ‘Lord, help me find Jan,’” said Smith. His prayer was answered this past spring when the two reconnected by phone. “When I heard his voice, it all came back,” said Branton. Smith flew to Georgia to visit Branton and delivered a huge surprise at the airport. “I ran up and hugged him, and when he stepped back and pulled something out of his pocket, and it was a box. I opened it and I said, ‘Oh my gosh, what are you doing?’ and he said, ‘Will you marry me?’ and I said, ‘Yes!’” exclaimed Branton. These days, Smith, who lives at Asher Point Independent Living of Arlington, is spending more time in Georgia, where the couple will exchange vows later this year. He expects to move there after the wedding. “She is the dream I’ve been waiting for. I've loved her for 50 years,” said Smith.
